Campaign:

“Beat Plastic Pollution” – inspired by United Nation Environment Programms “World Environment Day-2025” campaign.

Plastic pollution has become a global concern due to its severity. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, 19–23 million tons of plastic enter aquatic ecosystems every year. The entry of micro plastics into the human food chain is also extremely alarming.

To raise awareness about this issue, the United Nation Environment Programme (United Nation), designated the theme for this year’s World Environment Day (2025) as “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Campaign details:

Aligning with this global initiative, ‘Jiva Mitra – Friend of Life’ launched a special awareness campaign in collaboration with ‘Barekuri Eco Development Society, Barekuri, Tinsukia’ in three schools across the Tinsukia District, Assam

➢ Barekuri Higher Secondary School,

➢ Bodousa Senior Secondary School, and

➢ Tongona High School,

On June 5, 7, and 12, respectively. The programs included plantation drives and the installation of eco-friendly dustbins made of bamboo, encouraging sustainable waste management practices among students.

On the final day, an awareness meeting on plastic pollution and biodiversity conservation was organized at Tongona High School. Prominent environmental activist Diplob Chutia addressed the gathering, delivering a powerful message about the conservation of the Hoolock Gibbon, India’s only ape species.

It is noteworthy that the villagers of Barekuri, where the awareness drive began, were honored with the Assam Gaurav Award 2024 by the Government of Assam for their pioneering role in Hoolock Gibbon conservation—a proud moment highlighted during the event.

To engage students creatively, Hoolock Gibbon-themed masks were distributed, and Jiva Mitra conducted audio-visual sessions highlighting the environmental and health hazards posed by plastic pollution. Students also participated in discussions on the relationship between humans and wildlife and were informed about legal measures and laws regulating plastic use in India. The event was attended by the school’s headmaster, teachers, staff, and JivaMitra members Dhrubajyoti kakati, Prithviraj Das, Jodu Nath Chetia, and Pranjal Pratim Moran.

This initiative by Jiva Mitra marks a significant step toward students’ awareness, reinforcing the urgent global call to beat plastic pollution and protect biodiversity.
